November 2012 – Alternative worlds

Do you wonder if there is life after death?

Do you wonder if we are alone in the universe?

Do you wonder if humans are the only intelligent life on Earth?

If you do, then this month’s theme is for you. Alternative worlds is about escaping our reality and daring to believe that there may be something else out there. This could mean reading science fiction, fantasy, urban fantasy, horror, or paranormal fiction. It could even mean something set in an exotic country – a very different world from Wales!

You could try a dystopian future – the success of The Hunger Games has led to an explosion in this genre. There are so many to choose from, but maybe try Blood Red Road by Moira Young or Partials by Dan Wells, for two completely different takes on what happens after the apocalypse.

How about some time with the living dead? There is some great zombie fiction out there at the moment – my favourites are The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan or Allison Hewitt Is Trapped by Madeleine Roux. Gory, but great.

There are many alternative worlds out there, your task this month is to read about one. Tweet what you are reading, using the hashtag #NPTworld. We will be having a live twitter discussion on a date to be confirmed, you can join in using the hashtag.

Remember… it is up to you:

“to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

(I had to get a Star Trek quote in there somewhere!)
